In January 2018, during an internal audit and analysis of the body-worn camera project, the Sheriff’s Office identified the need to purchase additional body-worn cameras. When the initial contract was awarded to Axon, the number of body-worn cameras (1,200) was based on the current staffing levels at that time rather than authorized staffing levels. Due to the success of the Sheriff’s Office recruitment and hiring strategies, the number of vacant positions that have been filled has exceeded initial projections. In order to ensure that enough body-worn cameras are available as needed for the higher than anticipated staffing levels, the Sheriff’s Office now requires purchase of additional cameras beyond the 1,200. The Sheriff’s Office has projected an additional 340 body worn cameras are needed to meet current and future deployment needs based on total authorized staffing and anticipated new hires. The Sheriff’s Office has a current need for approximately 70 BWC’s in FY18. Having additional body-worn cameras on-hand will ensure sufficient inventory is available for newly hired Deputies.
