The Sheriff’s Office recognizes that a revised Use of Force policy will be a cornerstone of our ongoing jail reform efforts. We have been eager to adopt and train on a new policy, yet this has been a time-consuming endeavor requiring significant collaboration with numerous stakeholders.
County Counsel’s retained expert on Use of Force has been assisting the County with the development of a revised Use of Force Policy and training for Custody Bureau staff throughout much of this fiscal year. This has included obtaining input from plaintiffs and the affected labor organization. As such, the County has engaged in continual negotiations with plaintiffs and the affected labor organization while working collaboratively towards finalization of the new policy. The policy must be finalized by all stakeholders before UOF training can be provided. Until that is completed, the current UOF policy is part of the training for cadets as part of the correctional academy.
